Buying Jewellery Online Safely in India: A Checklist

The Innocence team · 4 October 2026 · 3 min read

Online jewellery shopping is convenient, and it is safe when you check the right things. This checklist covers hallmarks, price breakup, certificates, delivery and returns.

Buying jewellery online has become common, from small gifts to engagement rings. It can be as safe as shopping in a store if you know what to check. Use this list before you pay.

1. Check the seller

  • Is there a real business name, address, phone number and GSTIN?
  • Is there a physical showroom you can visit, or a verifiable contact?
  • Do the policies for returns, exchange and delivery appear on the site, in full?

A seller who hides their identity is a warning sign.

2. Look for hallmark and HUID

A gold piece should state its purity and BIS hallmark with HUID. The listing should show the HUID or promise it on delivery, and the invoice should state it. See what a HUID is and how to verify it.

3. Demand a price breakup

A trustworthy listing shows gold weight, purity, making charge, stone details and tax. If there is only a single price, you cannot tell what you are paying for. Learn how it should look in how jewellery price is calculated step by step.

4. Check diamond certification

For diamond jewellery, ask which laboratory graded the stones and whether the certificate is provided. Read diamond certificates: IGI, GIA, SGL and what they mean.

5. Look at the pictures critically

Good listings show several clear photographs, from different angles, with some indication of scale. Images are sometimes enlarged, so check the stated dimensions and weight. A ring shown in a macro photograph looks much larger than it is.

6. Know the return and exchange rules

Read how long you have to return a piece, what condition it must be in, who pays for shipping, and what happens to custom or resized items. If a piece is made to order, returns are often limited, so confirm before ordering.

7. Pay through safe channels

Use the payment methods offered on the site's checkout, and be wary of a request to pay by direct bank transfer to a personal account. Keep the payment confirmation.

8. Check delivery and insurance

Jewellery should be shipped insured, packed securely and delivered with a signature. Ask whether you need to record an unboxing and what to do if the package looks tampered with.

9. Check the size before ordering

Ring and bangle size matter. Use the shop's size guide and measure carefully. See how to measure your ring size at home and how to measure bangle size.

10. Inspect on arrival

Check that the piece matches the order, that the hallmark is present, that the stones are secure and that the certificate and invoice are in the box. Report problems promptly.

Common questions

Is it safe to pay online for expensive jewellery? Use the payment options on the seller's own checkout, keep the confirmation and check that the seller is a real business with a physical address.

What if the piece does not fit? Check resizing policy before you order. Some pieces can be resized and some cannot, and made-to-order items may not be returnable.

Should I film the unboxing? It is a good habit for valuable parcels. If anything looks wrong, you have a record to show.

A hybrid approach

Many people browse online and then visit to see the piece in person. We encourage that. You can look through our diamond jewellery with every price broken down, then book an appointment at our Patna showroom to try pieces before you decide.
