How to Choose a Diamond Pendant: Solitaire and Designs

The Innocence team · 4 October 2026 · 3 min read

A diamond pendant is one of the most wearable pieces of jewellery. Here is how to choose the stone, the design, the chain and the length.

A diamond pendant sits at the centre of your look, close to the face. It is worn daily by many, and gifted often. A few points make the choice clear.

Solitaire, cluster or design

  • Solitaire: one diamond, simple and timeless. See solitaire vs cluster diamond jewellery.
  • Cluster: several small diamonds in a group, for a larger look.
  • Motif designs: a heart, a flower, a letter, an evil-eye or a geometric shape set with diamonds.
  • Halo pendants: a centre stone surrounded by smaller ones.

The stone

For a solitaire pendant, the stone is the centre of attention.

The setting

A pendant is less exposed to knocks than a ring. Prong settings let in the most light, and bezels protect the stone. Look at the setting from the side and the back, since a pendant is seen from many angles. See diamond ring settings, most of which apply.

The bail

The bail is the loop that holds the chain. It should be sturdy, smooth and large enough for the chain you want. A poor bail can wear a chain or fail.

The chain

The chain makes a big difference to how the pendant looks and wears.

  • Fineness: a fine chain for a small pendant, a heavier one for a larger pendant.
  • Style: cable, box or rope chains are common.
  • Clasp: a secure lobster clasp is easy to use.
  • Length: see pendant and necklace length guide.

The metal

Yellow, white or rose gold, or platinum. Match it to what you wear. See rose gold, white gold and yellow gold: how to choose.

What to check in person

  1. The stone should sparkle evenly from several angles.
  2. The pendant should hang straight and lie flat.
  3. The bail should be smooth.
  4. The chain should sit comfortably.
  5. The hallmark and HUID should be present on the gold.

Gift or self purchase

A pendant is a classic gift. See jewellery gifts for wife she will wear. If you are buying for yourself, choose the one you will wear daily.

Care

Clean a pendant gently, and check the bail and the clasp from time to time. See how to clean diamond jewellery at home.

Common questions

Is a bigger pendant better? Not necessarily. A smaller, well-cut stone can look more lively.

Can I wear a pendant with a different chain? Yes, if the bail fits the chain.

Is a pendant a good first diamond piece? Yes. It is easy to wear and rarely needs resizing.

Thinking about the occasion

For everyday wear, pick a pendant with a low, smooth shape that will not catch on clothes. For evenings, you can choose something with more sparkle or a larger stone. If you want one pendant for both, choose a classic solitaire in a mid-size, which suits a shirt at work and a dress at dinner without looking out of place.
