18K vs 22K Gold Jewellery: Which Should You Buy?

The Innocence team · 4 October 2026 · 3 min read

22K is richer and softer, 18K is stronger and suits stones. Here is how to choose between them for rings, bangles, chains and diamond jewellery.

Almost everyone who buys gold jewellery in India ends up asking the same question: should it be 22K or 18K? The honest answer is that neither is better in general. They are good at different things. Once you know what each does well, the choice for a particular piece becomes easy.

The core difference

22K gold is 91.6 percent gold. 18K gold is 75 percent gold. The rest in each case is other metals, mixed in to make the gold harder. More gold means a deeper yellow colour and a softer metal. Less gold means a firmer metal and a slightly lighter shade.

Where 22K makes sense

  • Plain bangles, kadas and chains: these are simple shapes with no delicate parts, so the softness is not a problem and the rich colour shows well.
  • Traditional wedding sets: many families prefer 22K for its colour and because it is the form of gold they are used to.
  • When you want the highest gold content for the weight: 22K contains more gold in every gram.

Where 18K makes sense

  • Anything with diamonds or gemstones: prongs and settings must hold stones tightly for years. A firmer metal grips better and resists bending.
  • Fine and detailed designs: thin bands, filigree and light pendants keep their shape better.
  • Daily-wear pieces: studs, small rings and nose pins take knocks, and a firmer alloy copes with them.

That is why most diamond jewellery, including the pieces on our site, is made in 18K. If you are curious how the numbers work, read what 18K gold is and why diamond jewellery uses it.

What about price?

Price depends on gold weight, the rate of the day, making charges and any stones. Because 22K has more gold per gram, the same weight of 22K contains more gold than 18K, so the gold part of the price is higher. But a piece is rarely just gold weight. Making charges can be a significant part of a delicate design, and stones add their own value. For a fair comparison, look at the full breakdown, as described in how a jewellery price is calculated.

Colour and appearance

Side by side, 22K looks a little more orange-yellow and 18K a little paler and cleaner. Under shop lighting the difference can look small, but it is visible. If you are matching a new piece with something you already own, bring the old piece along.

Wear and care

Both are real gold and both can last generations with care. 22K will pick up scratches and soft dents more readily. 18K tends to look sharp for longer. Either way, store pieces separately and avoid wearing them for heavy manual work.

Hallmark: the same rule applies to both

Whichever you choose, ask for BIS hallmarked jewellery. The mark will read 22K916 or 18K750, along with a HUID. Learn how to check it in what a HUID is and how to verify your jewellery.

A simple way to decide

Ask what the piece will do. If it is a plain, sturdy item that you will wear for years and may pass on, 22K is a lovely choice. If it holds stones, has fine detail or will be worn every day, 18K is usually the better fit. Many people own both.
