Anniversary Bands and Eternity Rings: A Guide
The Innocence team · 4 October 2026 · 3 min read

An anniversary band or eternity ring marks a milestone with a line of diamonds. Here is how full and half designs differ, and how to choose one that fits your life.
An anniversary band is a ring given to mark a milestone in a marriage or relationship. An eternity ring is a style of band set with stones, and it is a popular choice for anniversaries. Both pair beautifully with an engagement ring.
What is an eternity ring?
An eternity ring has a row of stones that continues all the way round the band (a full eternity) or part of the way (a half or three-quarter eternity). The unbroken circle is a symbol of lasting commitment, which gives the ring its name.
Full eternity
Stones go all the way round. It looks continuous and sparkles from every angle. Because there is no plain section, it is difficult to resize, so the size must be right. It can also be less comfortable if the stones press against neighbouring fingers.
Half or three-quarter eternity
Stones cover the top half or three quarters, and the rest of the band is plain metal. It is easier to resize, more comfortable and often more affordable. It is a popular practical choice.
Settings
- Shared prong: small prongs are shared between neighbouring stones for a continuous sparkle.
- Channel: stones sit in a channel between two walls of metal, secure and smooth.
- Bezel or flush: stones set into the band for a sleek look.
- Claw: individual prongs for each stone, with a slightly raised profile.
Choosing the stones
- Size: from small, delicate stones to bold ones.
- Shape: round brilliant stones are common, and baguettes, princess or oval are also used.
- Quality: a band is judged by how well matched the stones are. See melee diamonds.
Sizing
An eternity ring should be sized exactly. If you are buying as a surprise, see how to find her ring size without asking. Remember that fingers change over the years, so ask about resizing options for a half eternity.
Stacking with other rings
An eternity band sits well next to an engagement ring, if the metals match and the heights suit. A low engagement ring pairs easily. A tall one may need a contoured band. See stacking rings: how to mix and match.
Wear and care
A band of many stones needs regular checks for loose stones. See how often to check your jewellery prongs and clasps. Clean it as in how to clean diamond jewellery at home.
Budget
The cost depends on the number, size and quality of the stones and the metal. A half eternity uses fewer stones than a full one. Ask for the breakup.
