Dhanteras 2026 Jewellery Buying Guide

The Innocence team · 4 October 2026 · 3 min read

Dhanteras 2026 falls on 6 November, two days before Diwali. Here is how to plan your purchase, avoid the rush and check what you buy.

Dhanteras opens the Diwali festival, and for many families it is a day to buy gold, silver or something new for the home. Published festival calendars place Dhanteras 2026 on 6 November, with Diwali on 8 November. Dates and the best times to buy are set by the panchang, so check your local calendar or ask a family priest for the muhurat that applies to you.

Why people buy on Dhanteras

Dhanteras is associated with wealth and prosperity, and buying gold or other valuable items on the day is a long-held custom in many communities. Whether you follow it or not, the day brings a lot of shoppers into jewellery showrooms, which is why a little planning helps.

Plan ahead, because the day is busy

  • Decide what you want weeks in advance. A coin, a pair of earrings, a pendant, a band: knowing the choice saves time.
  • Visit before the day. You can view, try and compare calmly, and choose a piece that you can collect or have ready on the day.
  • Ask about booking. Many jewellers let you reserve a piece or fix details in advance. Ask how the rate and price are fixed, and what you can change.
  • Plan your visit time. Mornings and late evenings may be busier. Ask the shop what suits.

What to buy

Gold coins and bars, plain gold jewellery, diamond jewellery and silver items are all bought. A few points on each:

Check what you buy

On any gold purchase:

  1. Look for the BIS hallmark and HUID. See what a HUID is and how to verify it.
  2. Ask for an itemised bill. See how to read a jewellery invoice line by line.
  3. Check the gold rate used that day. See why gold rate differs between shops and cities.
  4. Confirm the exchange and return terms.

Keep within a budget

Festival offers can tempt you to spend more. Set a total before you go, and treat discounts as part of the price comparison, not a reason to buy extra. See buying gold jewellery when prices are high.

Many buyers choose lighter designs that use less gold. See lightweight gold jewellery: why it is popular now.

Payment and safety

Use payment methods that give you a record, and keep the receipts. Carry your purchases carefully, and avoid displaying them in crowds. See keeping jewellery safe at home and in lockers.

If Dhanteras is not the right day for you

Some families prefer another auspicious day. See Dhanteras or Akshaya Tritiya: which day to buy gold.

Common questions

Do I have to buy on the exact day? It is a custom, not a requirement. Some families buy earlier and keep the piece to bring home on Dhanteras.

Is it better to buy gold or diamonds? It depends on your purpose. Gold coins hold their gold value, and jewellery is for wear.

What if the showroom is crowded? Book a time, or visit on another day.
