Why Gold Rate Differs Between Shops and Cities

The Innocence team · 4 October 2026 · 3 min read

Gold rates can differ by city and even by shop. Here are the reasons, from benchmark rates to local costs and purity, and how to compare rates fairly.

You check the gold rate on your phone, then hear a slightly different figure at a shop. A friend in another city quotes another number again. Nobody is necessarily wrong. Here is why the figures differ.

There is a benchmark, and then there is the local rate

Gold prices start from international markets and the import cost in rupees. From there, a benchmark rate is published for the day by market bodies and bullion associations. Jewellers in each city then work from a local rate, which reflects that day's benchmark plus local factors.

Reasons rates differ by city

  • Local taxes and levies: these can vary slightly between states and affect the final local figure.
  • Transport and handling: bullion is shipped to centres around the country, and costs differ.
  • Local demand and supply: a busy wedding week can move the local premium.
  • Local bullion associations: many cities have an association that sets a daily local rate, and shops follow it.

Reasons rates differ between shops in the same city

  • Which purity is being quoted: a rate for 24K, 22K and 18K differ in proportion to purity. Make sure you are comparing the same karat.
  • Timing: gold can move during the day, and a rate from the morning may not match one from the evening.
  • Whether tax is included: some figures are before tax and some after.
  • Business policy: a jeweller may add a small margin or offer a discount.

24K rate versus the rate for your jewellery

The rate you see in news and apps is usually for 24K gold. Your jewellery is probably 18K or 22K. A rough way to estimate the rate for another purity is to multiply the 24K rate by the purity fraction: 18 divided by 24 for 18K, 22 divided by 24 for 22K. Jewellers use precise fineness, for example 750 for 18K and 916 for 22K, so use the shop's figure as the final word.

How to compare fairly

  1. Ask which purity the quoted rate refers to.
  2. Ask whether it is before or after tax.
  3. Note the time of day.
  4. Compare the whole price of the same piece, not only the rate.

The rate is one part of the price. Making charges and stone values can matter more on a finished piece. See how a jewellery price is calculated.

Should you wait for the rate to fall?

Nobody can reliably predict gold's daily movement. People who buy for a wedding or festival usually buy when they need the jewellery rather than waiting for a perfect day. If your purchase is flexible, you could split it into a couple of smaller purchases instead of a single one, but this is a personal decision rather than a rule. Our article on buying jewellery when prices are high offers practical ways to manage it.
