Diamond Studs Buying Guide: Size, Quality and Care

The Innocence team · 4 October 2026 · 3 min read

Diamond studs are often the first fine jewellery people buy and wear for decades. This guide covers size, quality, settings and backs, so you choose well.

A pair of diamond studs is a classic. They suit every outfit, work at any age and last. Because they are small, getting the details right is what separates a pair that sparkles from one that disappoints.

Understand total carat weight

Studs are usually listed by total carat weight for the pair. A pair of 0.50 carat total has two stones of about 0.25 carat each, roughly 4 mm across. See total carat weight in diamond jewellery explained.

Typical sizes:

  • 0.20 to 0.30 carat total: delicate and subtle, for everyday wear.
  • 0.50 carat total: a popular first pair, noticeable but not showy.
  • 1.00 carat total and above: a statement.

Choose by the look, not only the weight

Cut quality changes how large and bright a stud looks. A well-cut stone of a given weight looks bigger and livelier than a poorly cut one. See diamond cut grades explained.

Quality: where to spend

  • Cut: the most important for sparkle.
  • Colour: in studs, near-colourless grades look white to the eye. See diamond colour grades D to Z.
  • Clarity: at small sizes, eye-clean stones in the VS to SI range look clean. See diamond clarity.
  • Match: the two stones should look the same. Ask to see them side by side.

Settings

  • Prong (usually four or six): shows the most of the diamond and lets in light. Six prongs are more secure.
  • Bezel: wraps the stone for a modern look and protects the edge.
  • Basket or low-set: keeps the stone sitting neatly against the lobe.

See diamond ring settings, which apply to studs too.

Earring backs

The back keeps the stud from being lost.

  • Push backs (friction): the usual type. Check that they grip firmly.
  • Screw backs: the most secure, good for larger studs and active wear.
  • Locking backs: add security to the push type.

Heavier studs benefit from secure backs, and many people buy a spare set of backs.

Metal

Yellow, white and rose gold, and platinum, are all used. 18K gold is firm enough for secure prongs. Match the metal to the other jewellery you wear. See what 18K gold is and why diamond jewellery uses it.

Check the posts

The post, which passes through the piercing, should be smooth and the right thickness. If you have sensitive ears, ask about the metal of the post. See skin sensitivity and jewellery metals explained.

Questions to ask

  1. What is the total carat weight and the quality range?
  2. Are the two stones matched?
  3. What type of backs are included?
  4. What is the hallmark and HUID of the gold?
