Earrings for Your Face Shape: What Suits You Best

The Innocence team · 4 October 2026 · 3 min read

Earrings can soften or sharpen a face. Here is a practical guide to choosing styles that flatter round, oval, square, heart-shaped and long faces.

Earrings frame the face, so their shape and length can balance or emphasise your features. These are guidelines, not rules. If you love an earring, wear it.

How to find your face shape

Pull your hair back and look in a mirror. Notice the widest part of your face (forehead, cheekbones or jaw), and the shape of your jawline and chin. Most faces fall into one of a few broad shapes.

Oval

Oval faces are balanced, and nearly any style works. Studs, hoops and drops all look good. You can pick by occasion and taste.

Round

A round face is about as wide as it is long, with soft curves. Earrings that add length and angles can balance it.

  • Try: long drops, elongated shapes such as pear or marquise, and angular designs.
  • Avoid: large round hoops and very round studs, which echo the face's roundness.

Square

A square face has a strong jawline and forehead of similar width. Softer, curved shapes balance the angles.

  • Try: round and oval shapes, curved drops, and hoops.
  • Avoid: very angular and geometric earrings that repeat the jaw.

Heart

A heart-shaped face is wider at the forehead and narrower at the chin. Earrings that add width at the lower face help balance it.

  • Try: drops that widen towards the bottom, such as teardrops, and chandeliers.
  • Avoid: wide studs or wide hoops at the top of the ear.

Long (oblong)

A long face is narrow and longer than it is wide. Earrings that add width, and not too much length, balance the proportions.

  • Try: studs, wider hoops and rounded clusters.
  • Avoid: very long, narrow drops that stretch the face further.

Diamond-shaped

A diamond-shaped face has high cheekbones, with a narrower forehead and chin. Earrings that soften the cheekbones suit it.

  • Try: drops and ovals, and studs with softness.
  • Avoid: wide designs at cheek level.

Hair and neck

The shape of your hair, and the length of your neck, also matter. Short hair shows earrings, and long hair covers them. A longer neck carries long drops easily.

Other things to consider

  • The shape of the earring against your ear: try both small and large sizes.
  • The neckline of your outfit: see bridal choker or long necklace with diamonds? for how necklines interact with jewellery.
  • Comfort: weight and balance matter more than any rule.

Test with a mirror

Hold a pair against your ears, look from the front and from the side, and turn your head. The one that makes you smile is the right one.

Common questions

Do face shape rules apply to men? The same ideas apply to men who wear earrings. See diamond studs and rings for men.

Can I wear any earrings if I like them? Yes. These are guides.

What if my face is between shapes? Use the ideas for the shape that is most visible.

Using the guidelines well

Think of face-shape advice as a starting point. Hair, skin tone, the clothes you wear and even your posture change what looks good on you. If a pair that is "wrong" for your shape makes you feel good, it is right. If you are unsure, take a photograph of yourself wearing each pair and compare them later. The photograph often shows what the mirror does not.

Earrings and glasses

If you wear glasses, remember that frames sit near the ear. Small studs and short drops avoid clashing with the arms of the glasses, while large hoops can tangle. Choose pieces that work together with your frames.
