Platinum 950 Jewellery: What It Is and Who It Suits
The Innocence team · 4 October 2026 · 3 min read

Platinum 950 is jewellery metal that is 95 percent pure platinum. It is dense, naturally white and a popular choice for diamond rings. Here is how it compares and who it suits.
Platinum is the quieter alternative to gold. It does not flash yellow or rose, and it has a cool, subtle shine that sets off diamonds. If you see "Pt950" or "950" on a jewellery piece, here is what it means.
What does 950 mean?
950 means 950 parts per thousand, so 95 percent of the metal is platinum. The rest is usually another metal from the platinum group, added to help with working and finishing. In India, platinum jewellery is commonly sold at this purity.
How platinum differs from gold
- Colour: naturally silvery white, so it does not need a surface layer to stay white.
- Density: heavier than gold, so a platinum piece of the same size weighs more.
- Strength: it is a durable metal. When platinum is scratched, the metal is displaced rather than lost, which develops a soft, worn-in surface called a patina.
- Purity: it is used at a much higher purity than white gold, which is only 75 percent gold in 18K.
Why it suits diamond jewellery
A cool white metal makes a diamond appear bright and colourless, and platinum's strength is well suited to holding stones. Many engagement rings and wedding bands are made in platinum for these reasons. We compare it with the common alternative in platinum vs white gold for diamond rings.
Skin sensitivity
Because platinum jewellery is mostly pure platinum, it is often chosen by people who find that some alloys irritate their skin. If you know you are sensitive to certain metals, ask about the composition of anything you buy. See skin sensitivity and jewellery metals explained.
What about price?
Platinum is priced on its own market rate, and because it is dense and used at high purity, a platinum piece often costs more than a similar piece in white gold. Making charges can also be higher because the metal is harder to work. Check the total price and the breakup on the bill.
The patina question
Daily wear leaves tiny scratches that blend into a soft satin look. Some people like this character. Others prefer a bright mirror shine and have the piece repolished, which a jeweller can do.
Care
Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Store it separately so harder stones do not scratch it, and have settings checked from time to time. See how to clean diamond jewellery at home.
Common questions
Does platinum tarnish? No, it does not tarnish. It may darken slightly with a patina, which is a surface effect that polishing removes.
Can platinum be resized? Yes, but it takes more skill and time than gold because the metal is hard and has a high melting point. Ask the jeweller about resizing before you buy.
Is platinum the same as silver? No. Platinum is a dense, rare and costly metal. Silver is lighter, softer and much cheaper, and it tarnishes.
Is it for you?
Choose platinum if you want a white metal that stays white, a secure setting for a diamond and a metal with high purity. Choose gold if you prefer warmth and traditional appeal, or if budget is a priority.
