Gold Rate in Patna: How to Read It Before You Buy

The Innocence team · 4 October 2026 · 4 min read

The rate on a board in a Patna shop is only the start of the price. Here is how to read it, compare it and see what else goes into the bill.

Anyone buying gold in Patna soon hears about the day's gold rate. It is displayed in shops, quoted in news and discussed in families. But the rate is not the same as the price you pay. Knowing how to read it helps you compare shops and avoid surprises at the counter.

What the rate refers to

The rate is a price per gram, usually quoted for a particular purity. In India you will commonly see rates for 24K (the purest form) and for 22K, the purity used in most traditional jewellery. Lower purities such as 18K, used often in diamond jewellery, are priced proportionally. See gold karat chart: 9K, 14K, 18K, 22K, 24K explained.

Always ask which purity the quoted rate applies to. A rate for 24K cannot be applied to a 22K piece without conversion.

Why rates can differ between shops and cities

The rate follows national and international markets, but local factors can create small differences: transport and insurance costs, the way the shop sets its daily rate, and the time of day at which it was updated. See why gold rate differs between shops and cities.

Compare the rate at the same time of day, for the same purity.

Rate is not the final price

The price of a piece includes:

  1. Metal value: weight multiplied by the rate for the purity.
  2. Making charges: a per-gram or percentage amount for design and labour.
  3. Stones, if any, priced separately.
  4. GST on the total.

How to compare two shops

  • Ask both for the rate, the purity, the net weight, the making charge and the final total.
  • Compare the same design or a similar one.
  • Check the hallmark and HUID in each case.
  • Look at the total, not the rate alone.

A shop with a slightly lower rate can still charge more in the end, and a shop with a slightly higher rate may charge lower making charges.

Net weight and gross weight

Stones, enamel and fittings add weight that is not gold. Make sure that the metal value is calculated on the net gold weight, and that the stone weight and price are listed separately. See how to read a jewellery invoice line by line.

Fixing the rate for a booking

Some shops let you lock the rate at booking, usually with an advance, for a purchase later. Ask how the lock works, how long it holds, what happens if the rate falls, and whether the advance is refundable. Get the terms in writing.

Rates and festivals

Rates move each day. Demand around festivals does not decide the rate by itself, but crowds make comparison harder. Visit before the rush if you can. See Dhanteras 2026 jewellery buying guide.

Old gold exchange

If you are exchanging old gold, the rate used for your old gold, the purity test and any deduction all affect what you get. See old gold exchange: how it works and what to check.

Do not try to time the market

Nobody can reliably predict the rate. Buy when you need to buy, within your budget. See buying gold jewellery when prices are high: smart ways.

How we show prices

Our prices are computed live from the day's gold rate, and you can see the breakup on each product page. See our diamond jewellery.

Common questions

Why does my family jeweller quote a different rate? The rate may be set at a different time or for a different purity.

Is the rate in the news the rate I pay? It is a reference. The shop's rate is what applies.

Should I wait for a lower rate? There is no reliable way to predict it.
