Wedding Bands for Men: Gold and Platinum Options
The Innocence team · 4 October 2026 · 3 min read

A man's wedding band is worn every day for decades. Here is how to choose the metal, width and finish, and how to get the size right.
A wedding band is probably the piece of jewellery that a man will wear most. It deserves thought about comfort and durability as well as looks.
Choosing the metal
- Yellow gold: warm, classic and traditional. 18K is firm and rich in colour. See what 18K gold is.
- White gold: a cool silver tone, with a bright finish that may need re-finishing over time.
- Rose gold: warm with a pink tint, for a modern look.
- Platinum: naturally white, dense and durable, and heavier on the hand. See platinum 950 jewellery.

Choosing the width
Men's bands often fall between 4 mm and 8 mm. A slimmer band looks elegant and is comfortable. A wider band makes a bolder statement and suits larger hands. If you work with your hands, a slightly wider, flat or domed band is sturdy, but a very wide band can feel tight on a hot day.
Profile and finish
- Flat: a modern, clean look.
- Domed: rounded on the outside, a classic shape.
- Comfort fit: the inside curves gently, so the band slides on and sits comfortably.
- Finishes: polished, matte, brushed or hammered. A matte or brushed finish hides small scratches.
Adding detail
- Engraving inside the band: a date, initials or a phrase.
- A single stone: a small flush-set diamond is practical.
- A groove or an edge detail: adds character without fragility.
Sizing for men
Men's fingers often have larger knuckles. A band must pass over the knuckle but sit snugly at the base of the finger. If you are between sizes, a wider band usually needs a slightly larger size than a thin one. Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are a bit larger, and not when cold. See how to measure your ring size at home and ring size chart in India.
Everyday durability
Bands get knocked. Gold and platinum both withstand daily wear. Gold may show surface scratches, and platinum develops a soft patina. Both can be polished. Take the band off for heavy lifting or sports with equipment.
Matching with a partner's ring
You can match metal and finish, or keep the bands different. See matching couple rings and bands: ideas.
Budget
The price depends on the weight and the metal, plus any stones and engraving. A wider band uses more metal and costs more. Ask for the breakup. See how jewellery price is calculated step by step.
Questions to ask
- What is the purity, and is it hallmarked with a HUID?
- Can it be resized, and how much?
- What engraving options are there?
- What is the exchange policy if the fit is off?
Common questions
Can a man's band be resized? Often yes by a size or two, but bands with stones all the way round or with engraving on the outside can be harder to resize.
Which is more comfortable, a wide or a slim band? Slim bands feel lighter. Wide bands feel more present and can feel tighter in warm weather, so go half a size up if needed.
What about plain gold for work with machinery? Remove any ring when working near moving machinery, whatever the metal, for safety.
