How to Choose a Diamond Nose Pin

The Innocence team · 4 October 2026 · 3 min read

A diamond nose pin is a small piece with a big effect. Here is what to look for in the stone, the setting, the metal and the back.

A diamond nose pin adds a point of light to the face. It is a small purchase, but the details matter more at this size, because the pin is seen up close and worn all day.

The stone

Diamonds in nose pins are small, usually one to three millimetres across. Even so, quality shows.

  • Cut and sparkle: a well-cut stone looks lively. Hold it under a light and tilt it.
  • Colour: near-colourless stones look white, which is usually the goal. See diamond colour grades D to Z.
  • Clarity: at this size, inclusions are rarely visible. See diamond clarity.
  • Size: a small stone is delicate, and a larger one makes more of a statement.

Small stones are not certified one by one. See melee diamonds.

The setting

  • Prong setting: lets the most light in. Check that prongs are smooth so they do not snag.
  • Bezel setting: a rim of metal around the stone, smooth and secure.
  • Flower or cluster: several small stones for a larger look.

A setting should be low and smooth. Anything that catches on a towel or a dupatta is a nuisance.

The metal

18K gold is firm and suits small settings. White, yellow and rose gold choices let you match your other jewellery. See rose gold, white gold and yellow gold: how to choose. Platinum is another option for those with sensitive skin. See platinum 950 jewellery.

The post and back

The post must match your piercing in thickness and length. See nose pin size and fit guide. The back should be secure and comfortable, with no sharp edges.

Hallmark

Gold nose pins should carry a hallmark, as for other gold jewellery, though very small items can be exempt from hallmarking requirements. Ask what applies to the piece you are buying, and ask for the details on the bill. See is hallmarking mandatory for gold jewellery in India?.

Style

The pin should suit your face and your daily wear. See nose pin styles: stud, ring and nath.

Price

A nose pin is a small item, so its price is mostly the stone and the making. Ask for the breakup. See how jewellery price is calculated step by step.

Daily care

Clean it gently and check the setting now and then. A small stone can loosen over time. See how often to check your jewellery prongs and clasps.

Common questions

Can I wear my nose pin to bed? Many do. If it irritates you or catches on bedding, remove it.

Will a diamond nose pin fall out? A secure back and a well-fitting post make this unlikely. If it feels loose, have it checked.

Is it a good first piece of diamond jewellery? Yes. It is affordable, personal and easy to wear.
